Three Smoothies to Kickstart Your Morning
By Danielle Omar RDN
I love to kickstart my morning with a green smoothie! It’s a quick and easy way to get a burst of energy and a ton of plant goodness at the very beginning of the day. With just a few minutes of prep time, I can whip up a tasty smoothie that’s packed with nutritious ingredients. Starting my day in a healthy way also helps me continue to make healthy choices later. The best part about a smoothie is that I can take it with me as I go about my morning.
Today I’m sharing three of my favorite go-to smoothie recipes as well as my easy smoothie formula so you can kickstart your day with an amazing smoothie, too.
Why Drink Green Smoothies?
Smoothies are a great way to hydrate, get plenty of fiber, and amp up your antioxidant intake first thing in the morning. I also love being able to add functional ingredients like herbs, adaptogens, prebiotics, and fruit and veggie powders to my smoothies.
My Go to Smoothie Formula
When I’m developing a smoothie recipe, I try to keep the flavors balanced by using a formula. You can blend up a ton of variations using my smoothie “formula” below. It really helps if you’re new to smoothie making and aren’t confident about proportions.
My Smoothie Formula:
- 1 cup of fruit
- 1 cup veggies
- 1 handful greens
- 1 cup liquid of choice
- 1 serving healthy fat (½ avocado, 2 Tbsp chia seed or flaxseed, MCT oil, etc.)
- Functional powders & greens powders
- Fresh Herbs
My Drink Your Greens smoothie is packed with phytonutrients from the blueberries, spinach, red cabbage, live cultures from the Kefir. I also added an immune and bone boost from the FitFormula Wellness Classic Calcium and Vitamin D powder. If you’re looking for an effortless way to get calcium and vitamin D, these little packets are super handy. You can add them to your smoothie or just pop them in your mouth - no water required!
As you age, bone health is so important, especially for women who are no longer cycling. When you combine vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin C together, your body is able to absorb the calcium better. Not only that, most of us can use an extra daily boost of vitamin D in the winter.
This smoothie is also great for gut health because it has lots of fiber and live cultures from the kefir. Did you know that kefir is a more potent source of healthy bacteria than yogurt? Kefir grains (the starter culture used to make kefir) contain up to 61 strains of bacteria and yeasts
Drink Your Greens
- 1/2 cup filtered water
- 1 packet FF Calcium + Vitamin D powder
- 1 cup plain kefir
- 3/4 cup frozen Wild Blueberries
- 1 cup chopped baby spinach
- 1 1/2 cups red cabbage
My Green Grapefruit Smoothie is packed with vitamin C, calcium and healthy fats from avocado, not to mention all of the amazing plant goodness from the spinach and kale.
Vitamin C is such a powerhouse in the body, but your body can’t make it on its own. It can strengthen your immune system, lower your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure, prevent gout, boost iron and calcium absorption, and protect your memory as you age. I almost forgot, vitamin C also helps support collagen, which is super important for healthy joints, connective tissue, and healthy skin.
Many people don’t get enough vitamin C, so I added FitFormula Wellness’s Vitamin C-Liposomal product and Calcium + Vitamin D powder to this smoothie. The vitamin C-Liposomal is my favorite vitamin C supplement because it’s more easily absorbed into your system through the digestive tract. This maximizes bioavailability of the vitamin C (and avoids upsetting sensitive stomachs) like ascorbic acid can.
Green Grapefruit Smoothie Recipe
- 1 Tbsp lime juice
- 1 packet FF Calcium + Vitamin D powder
- 1 tsp FF Vitamin C-Liposomal
- 1 tsp ginger
- 1 pink grapefruit, peeled and segmented
- 1/3 avocado
- 1 cup baby spinach
- 1 cup chopped baby kale
My Red Minty Magic is a refreshing and minty smoothie that’s perfect for crushing the winter blues. I’ve added an extra dose of fruit and veggies with FitFormula’s Fruit and Veggie Blend. I love adding this to smoothies because it boosts your fruit and veggie intake and adds more nutrients without adding a ton of bulk and calories.
Beets give this smoothie its beautiful color and are full of nutrients. In fact, beets contain a bit of nearly every essential nutrient needed by the body! They’re packed with antioxidants and help to fight inflammation. They’re also a great source of fiber for gut health.
Red Minty Magic
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 6 mint leaves
- 1 scoop FF fruit & veggie powder
- 1/4 cup beets, chopped
- 1 cup baby kale
- 1 cup frozen raspberries
Smoothies are an awesome way to kickstart your day. They let you quickly and easily create a nutrient dense meal and tailor it to your needs by adding a supplement or two like the ones that I mentioned here. You also improve your immune health and support a healthy gut when you get plenty of fiber and probiotics. All of that in a portable meal that you can eat on the go!
