Vitamin D is an important nutrient for the body. It helps your body absorb an optimal amount of calcium, which the National Institute of Health states that a child between ages nine and 18 needs 1,300 mg of calcium per day. Along with a lack of calcium absorption, there are other issues a lack of vitamin D may cause. Here are a few reasons why a vitamin d deficiency is bad.

1. Bone pain

As mentioned in the introduction, vitamin D helps you with calcium absorption. If you order calcium supplements to take but don't get enough vitamin D, your body may only absorb 10 to 15% of the calcium you're getting. As a result, this increases the likelihood of experiencing bone pain, lower back pain, or potentially even breaking bones. Over time a deficiency in vitamin D can also cause osteoporosis, which is a disease that causes bones to become weak to the point where mild actions such as bending over or coughing can cause fractures. Vitamin D supplements may be necessary to prevent bone pain if you're not able to get enough from other sources.

2. Weak immune system

In addition to helping your bones be strong, vitamin D also helps your immune system to be strong too. A strong immune system allows your body to be better able to fight off viruses and bacteria. If you find that you get sick with the cold or flu often, it’s possible that low vitamin D might be the cause. There have been studies that have shown a link between a deficiency in vitamin D and respiratory tract infections. Research suggests that vitamin D supplements may help with reducing the risk of developing respiratory tract infection.

3. Depression

There can be many causes as to why we might be experiencing a depressed mood. One of those possible causes can be vitamin D deficiency. It was found lower levels of vitamin D is linked to depression. In particular, it was most common among older adults. Another study was done to test the effects of giving vitamin D to those who experienced seasonal depression. During the colder months, people are often not able to get as much sunlight. When the skin receives exposure to sunlight, vitamin D is produced from cholesterol. When participants in the study were given vitamin D, it was found that it helped to improve the mood of those dealing with seasonal depression.

4. Tiredness

An often overlooked cause of tiredness and fatigue is vitamin D deficiency. Research has shown that low levels of the vitamin can cause feelings of tiredness. A participant in a study who experienced chronic daytime fatigue along with headaches was given vitamin D supplements to take. After taking the supplements and getting her vitamin D levels increased, the participant no longer experienced the symptoms of fatigue. In another research study that was conducted on nurses, it was found there was a connection between the nurses that reported feeling fatigued and low vitamin D levels. A vitamin D deficiency can potentially cause a variety of symptoms that can affect your quality of life. Before you start looking to order vitamin D supplements, be sure to discuss with your physician if it’s a safe option for you. If your physician determines that it is, when you take them, record how you feel as you’re taking them. It’ll help you determine if the supplements are an effective solution for you.
