by Cal-EZ Team
Vitamin D has been in the news a lot lately. Turn on a TV or radio to any health-related program or read any health and fitness related news or blog on the internet and all you hear is vitamin D, vitamin D, vitamin D! So guess what, the blog today is all about, you guessed it, VITAMIN D!
What exactly is vitamin D and why do we care?
Vitamin D is a hormone. Hormones are produced in the body and affects all parts of our bodies. Most people have heard of estrogen or testosterone. Both of these are reproductive hormones that are responsible for a lot of things in the body from maintaining mood to maintaining the skin. Vitamin D is a hormone like most other hormones, but the body produces it from sunlight. 15 minutes of sunlight exposure a day produces enough vitamin D for the body. Even though we may know that we only need a little sunlight to maintain vitamin D levels, many of us are //blog.cal-ez.com/blog/vitamin-d-and-spring">still deficient.
A few months ago, a study came out that showed that there is a correlation between low vitamin D levels and glucose metabolism. (Glucose metabolism is a fancy way to say how the body uses glucose in the body.) In this study, the researchers found that obese and lean subjects that did NOT have diabetes or other glucose metabolism disorders had normal or higher levels of vitamin D. Obese and lean subjects that had diabetes or other glucose metabolism disorders had low levels of vitamin D. The study shows that vitamin D is linked more closely to diabetes than obesity.
