Handling Love and Chronic Disease
by Samantha Smith on February 12, 2015
Ah, Valentine’s Day; the holiday of love, candy and greeting cards. Whether or not you have someone to celebrate this holiday with, being sick can really put a damper on the day. If you have a partner and want to do something special and celebrate, here are some ways you may be able to have your cake and eat it too! First, TALK TO YOUR PARTNER! I cannot stress enough that honest communication will be a key factor here. If you have gastroparesis like me, and have limited food options, look for a restaurant that can suit your needs. If that’s not possible, try cooking a meal at home! It can be exhausting to cook by yourself, so make it a couple effort! Many who suffer from any disease may tell you fatigue is one of the hardest symptoms to deal with. You can minimize the fatigue by splitting the work. A quiet night at home may be just what the doctor ordered. Planning is another key to getting through not just this holiday, but anything that’s out of the ordinary. You need to give yourself, and your partner, ample time to make decisions. (A plan B doesn’t hurt to have either, just in case.) If you’re single, this holiday can feel depressing, even more so if you’re sick. Don’t let it get you down! Planning helps in this situation too! If you have other friends to hang out with, make a night of it! If you’re not feeling up to going out, a good movie and/or a good book at home could do the trick. A holiday about love doesn’t just have to be about the love for a partner or family, but loving yourself too. No matter the situation or chronic disease, be aware and listen to what your body is telling you. Don’t be afraid of ruining anything, saying no, or suddenly needing a rest. Remember to celebrate the love you have for yourself too, and give your body and heart some TLC. Disclaimer: I have received complimentary Cal-EZ as a thank you for sharing my story.
