Typically we’re exhausted when we get home from work, so exercise is usually the farthest thing from our minds. Sure, we might promise ourselves we’re going to get up extra early to exercise… but in reality, we find ourselves hitting “snooze” multiple times. And yet, we all know getting in some exercise is pretty important to our health. So what can we do? Exercise at work, of course! If this sounds farfetched to you, hear me out. It may be easier than you think to squeeze in some workout time at the office.

The Benefits of Getting Exercise at Work

Maybe getting a chance to exercise at work was impossible years ago, but these days, you might be surprised at how easy many employers make. That’s because so many employers finally understand how crucial exercise is to our health. After all, people who work out regularly are in better physical and mental shape, with less stress and fewer health issues in general.

But the benefits of workplace fitness don’t end with employees. Allowing people to get some exercise at work can also benefit the employer. And that’s a no-brainer because just being physically healthier can reduce the number of sick days you need to take, thereby improving productivity at work. Moreover, your mental health often improves when you work out regularly, making you a happier, healthier employee in general.

What employer wouldn’t want that outcome? So it makes sense that as of 2015, 70 percent of employers were running a workplace well program, compared to 58 percent in 2008. In fact, now such a plan can be considered a perk that attracts new employees to businesses that are hiring. Clearly, employers have figured out that encouraging employees to exercise at work can benefit everyone involved.

How to Exercise at Work

If your job lacks a workplace fitness program, consider being the leader who gets the ball rolling! Suggest this benefit to your boss, and be sure to outline all the advantages of allowing employees to exercise at work. Some popular options include offering yoga classes to take in the office, creating a running club where employees run together after work, and putting together intramural leagues to play softball, volleyball, or other sports together.

If your employer isn’t all in when it comes to encouraging the staff to exercise at work, you don’t have to give up on the idea of getting fit during the workday. Even if you never have a moment alone and don’t have an office where you can work out, you can exercise at some point. For instance, you can park your car farther away and get in a short walk on the way to the office—or even try riding your bike to work. You can also take a few laps around the building on your lunch break.

On the other hand, you can do even more if you have a few minutes alone here and there at work—especially if you have your own office with room to move around. Some great exercises to do in order to get your heart rate up include jumping jacks, jogging in place, and jump squats. You can also build strength by doing lunges, crunches, pushups, squats, and tricep dips. And of course, even just taking a few minutes to stretch out your arms, legs, and neck every few hours can help you maintain your physical and mental health while you work.
