Turmeric has been used for centuries in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine, but now it’s becoming more popular in the United States, and for good reason. In addition to flavor, color, and preserve foods, the spice is also a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Turmeric contains a substance called Curcumin, which is largely responsible for its antioxidant powers. Studies have shown turmeric can lower LDL (the bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (the good stuff). It’s also been shown to decrease pain caused by arthritis, treat inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn’s, colitis), slow and even stop cancer cell growth, and help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. It truly is nature’s medicine!

How does it taste?

Turmeric is a warm, bitter spice with a rich golden color and is most commonly found as an ingredient in curry dishes. At your grocery store, find turmeric in the spice aisle, or the bulk foods section.
