Drinking enough water is key to staying hydrated, which is especially important in the summertime. I can tell you first hand, it’s easy to fall behind. The solution? Stay hydrated with your food, too! Lots of fruits and veggies have a surprisingly high water content, helping you stay hydrated with the extra bonus of fiber, electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals.
Below are 7 foods to eat to stay hydrated this summer (plus a super hydrating & delicious recipe!):
As the name suggests, watermelon is made mostly of water, so it’s great for keeping you hydrated! The fruit is about 95% water, so biting into a big hunk of watermelon is almost like sipping on a glass of water. Watermelon also brings vitamin C and the cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene to the table.
Cucumbers are also about 95% water, so their refreshing crunch helps hydrate you with every bite. They also give you a hydrating boost from calcium, magnesium, and potassium – all electrolytes that help your body maintain hydration. They’re practically an edible sports hydration drink (minus all the sugar and coloring!).
Jicama lends a satisfying crunch and slightly sweet flavor to any veggie tray, but it’s also great for hydration. It’s about 90% water and is great at soaking up any sweet or savory flavor you pair it with. I love it with a squeeze of lime and a dash of chili powder. Jicama is also full of vitamin C and potassium to keep you even more hydrated!
Are you sensing a theme here? Refreshing & crunchy fruits and veggies tend to be packed with water. Celery is about 96% water and provides the electrolytes sodium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus to boost hydration even more.
Any berry is great for hydration, but strawberries take the cake with about 92% water. They’re great for snacking or blending into refreshing smoothies for a hydrating treat during the summer.
Citrus fruits are super refreshing and jam-packed with water. Adding a squeeze of lemon or lime to water makes it more interesting, so you’re more likely to drink more and stay hydrated. When it comes to eating citrus, grapefruit is the way to go. Grapefruit is about 90% water and is a great source of vitamin C and potassium as well.
Bell peppers are about 92% water, which you can probably tell by their juicy crunch! They’re also full of vitamin C, beta carotene, and plenty of other phytonutrients.
Of course you can also enjoy any of these fruits and veggies on their own, but one of my favorite ways to stay hydrated in the summer is with a super refreshing, flavorful, and easy gazpacho soup.
