Blueberries are native to North America, and are truly an all-American food. The high antioxidant content in blueberries makes it a top superfood! Much of the power of blueberries lies in their glorious deep-blue hue. This color is a result of //" target="blank">anthocyanins, a type of phytonutrient that protects our brain from the damaging effects of oxidation and inflammation.

What are Phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients are compounds in foods that, when eaten, provide us with healthy benefits. They include antioxidants, flavonoids, and carotenoids, just to name a few. One important role of phytonurients is in cancer prevention. By helping our body cells communicate with each other, phytonutrients can help prevent the cellular mutations that cause the growth of cancer cells.

The Power of Blue

Blueberries provide full body antioxidant support and have a high water content, which makes them super hydrating for your skin and your body. Their main claim to fame is cardiovascular support, but they’ve also been shown to benefit brain health and increase memory, especially in older adults with dementia. Other amazing reasons to eat blueberries include: anti-cancer properties, eye health, relieving constipation, lowering blood sugar, preventing urinary tract infections, and preserving bone health.

How to Eat

To get the fullest health potential from your blueberry intake, go organic. Recent studies show that organically grown blueberries have significantly higher concentrations of total antioxidants than their conventionally grown counterparts. It’s recommended you consume blueberries every day to obtain the full health benefits. These juicy and delicious blue bites of flavor are fun to eat alone or as topping on yogurt, as a juice, or cooked into breads, muffins, and pancakes.
