5 Spices to Help Welcome Fall
Fall is on its way, and you know what that means: the return of the infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte (and pumpkin spice-flavored everything else, for that matter). It also means we’re cozying up with warming comfort foods and fall flavors. Spices can be a great way to add tons of comforting flavor to foods without drowning them in sugar, salt, or fat, making them perfect for creating satisfying dishes that are healthy and tasty. Cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg seem to get the most attention, but they aren’t the only spices you’ll want to move to the front of your spice cabinet this fall. Here are 5 more autumn spices to help you welcome in fall, the healthy way:

1. Cardamom

This fragrant, warm, and sweet spice fits right in there with your pumpkin cravings while breathing new light into a classic sweet spice blend. You might recognize the scent as one of the main ingredients in chai tea.
Sprinkle ground cardamom in your oatmeal or coffee for a warm, and soothing, yet slightly floral flavor that’s perfect for early fall!

2. Smoked Paprika

Smoked paprika brings an earthy and smoky flavor to just about any meal. It adds comforting meatiness to vegetarian dishes without requiring a smoker or any fancy cooking techniques!
I love it as an addition to a taco seasoning blend on crumbled tempeh for “meaty” tacos, or as a savory, smoky seasoning on roasted sweet potatoes.

3. Turmeric

Turmeric is all the rage right now because of its incredible health benefits, but in addition to being healthy, it’s also delicious! It’s warming and slightly bitter, and you’ll find it most often in curry dishes, which happen to be the perfect cozy dishes for fall.
I love cooking fall veggies in coconut milk with ground turmeric, ginger, and curry powder for a comforting and healthy curry stew.

4. Sage

Whether you grab it fresh or dried, sage is the ultimate herb for fall. It’s earthy and a little piney, and cooking with it always makes my house smell just like Thanksgiving.
It’s fantastic for seasoning poultry like chicken or turkey and adds extra earthy, cozy flavor to roasted veggies.

5. Garam Masala

This spice blend commonly used in Indian cooking translates to “warm spice,” and is usually a slightly spicy blend of cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, cumin, dried chiles, and black pepper. If you’re looking for a cozy spice blend to switch things up for fall - here’s your new go-to!
It’s perfect for spicing up a butternut squash soup or even sprinkling on air-popped popcorn for a spicy fall-inspired snack.
